A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in IBM Lotus Domino Server up to 5.0.9a (Groupware Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the component MS DOS Device Name. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Lotus Domino server 5.0.9a and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service by exhausting the number of working threads via a large number of HTTP requests for (1) an MS-DOS device name and (2) an MS-DOS device name with a large number of characters appended to the device name.
The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2002 by Peter Gründl as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-2025 since 07/14/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86312 (Lotus Domino MS-DOS Device Name Denial of Service Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (6348), SecurityFocus (BID 4020†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-29308†). The entry VDB-17116 is pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
