A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Xqus X-stat 2.2/2.3. Affected is the function phpinfo of the file x_stat_admin.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in x_stat_admin.php in x-stat 2.3 and earlier allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a parameter to the phpinfo action.
The bug was discovered 03/15/2002. The weakness was released 12/31/2002 (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-2044 since 07/14/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 291 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:x_stat_admin.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10513 (X-Stat Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
