Details
A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD up to 6.0 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component ee Editor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The ispell_op function in ee on FreeBSD 4.10 to 6.0 uses predictable filenames and does not confirm which file is being written, which allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack when ee invokes ispell.
The weakness was shared 01/11/2006 by Christian S.J. Peron with FreeBSD Team (Website). The advisory is shared at ftp.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-0055 since 12/30/2005. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56107 (Fedora 14 : ca-certificates-2011.78-1.fc14 (2011-11951)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.FreeBSD.org.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24074), Tenable (56107), SecurityFocus (BID 16207†), OSVDB (22320†) and Secunia (SA18404†). The entry VDB-1970 is related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
