ModLogAn up to 0.7.11 processor_web Hostname path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in ModLogAn 0.5/0.5.6/0.5.7/0.6/0.7.11. Affected is an unknown functionality of the component processor_web. The manipulation of the argument hostname with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in processor_web plugin for ModLogAn 0.5.0 through 0.7.11, when used with the splitby option, allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the hostname of a log entry.

The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2002 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-2050 since 07/14/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (7848) and SecurityFocus (BID 3821†). The entry VDB-19693 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
