The manipulation of the argument l/topic with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in index.php of Portix 0.4.02 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the (1) l and (2) topic parameters.

The bug was discovered 01/31/2002. The weakness was released 12/31/2002 (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-2084 since 07/14/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
