Details
A vulnerability was found in ISC BIND (Domain Name Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component DNS Cache. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use of cache containing sensitive information vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-524. The code uses a cache that contains sensitive information, but the cache can be read by an actor outside of the intended control sphere. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
BIND 4 and BIND 8, when resolving recursive DNS queries for arbitrary hosts, allows remote attackers to conduct DNS cache poisoning via a birthday attack that uses a large number of open queries for the same resource record (RR) combined with spoofed responses, which increases the possibility of successfully spoofing a response in a way that is more efficient than brute force methods.
The weakness was presented 12/31/2002 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-2211. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/06/2025). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10704), Secunia (SA20217†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31171†). See VDB-19854 and VDB-19855 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
