Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Netscreen ScreenOS 2.8/3.0/3.1/4.0 (Router Operating System). Affected is an unknown function of the component H.323 Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
NetScreen ScreenOS 2.8 through 4.0, when forwarding H.323 or Netmeeting traffic, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (firewall session table consumption) by establishing multiple half-open H.323 sessions, which are not cleaned up on garbage removal and do not time out for 36 hours.
The weakness was presented 12/31/2002 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.info. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-2266 since 10/17/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
