Details
A vulnerability was found in F-Secure Anti-Virus (Anti-Malware Software) (version now known) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component RAR Archive Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the extract_one function from lhext.c in LHA may allow attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long w (working directory) command line option, a different issue than CVE-2004-0769. NOTE: this issue may be REJECTED if there are not any cases in which LHA is setuid or is otherwise used across security boundaries.
The weakness was shared 01/19/2006 by Thierry Zoller (Website). The advisory is available at f-secure.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0771 since 08/04/2004. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14813 (FreeBSD : lha -- numerous vulnerabilities when extracting archives (91)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.
