Details
A vulnerability has been found in Qualcomm Eudora up to 6.1.1 (Mail Client Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Attachment Filename Handler. The manipulation with the input value <filename>. leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Eudora 5.1 allows remote attackers to bypass security warnings and possibly execute arbitrary code via attachments with names containing a trailing "." (dot).
The weakness was presented 12/31/2002 by Paul Szabo as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at cert.uni-stuttgart.de. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-2351 since 10/29/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (21695) and SecurityFocus (BID 5432†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
