A vulnerability has been found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.0.43 on Win 95/98/ME (Web Server) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component MS DOS Device Name. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Apache before 2.0.44, when running on unpatched Windows 9x and Me operating systems, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code via an HTTP request containing MS-DOS device names.
The weakness was published 02/07/2003 by Matthew Murphy (lion) as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
