nfs-server up to 2.x rpc.mountd realpath memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in nfs-server up to 2.x. Affected is the function realpath of the component rpc.mountd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the realpath function in nfs-server rpc.mountd, as used in SUSE Linux 9.1 through 10.0, allows local users to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors involving mount requests and symlinks.

The bug was discovered 01/26/2006. The weakness was released 01/27/2006 with SuSE (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.suse.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-0043 since 12/20/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22841 (Debian DSA-975-1 : nfs-user-server - buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4131.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24347), Tenable (22841), SecurityFocus (BID 16388†), OSVDB (22756†) and Secunia (SA18889†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
