FreeBSD 5.3/5.4 TCP/IP Stack SACK Segment infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD 5.3/5.4 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component TCP/IP Stack. The manipulation as part of a SACK Segment leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Selective Acknowledgement (SACK) in FreeBSD 5.3 and 5.4 does not properly handle an incoming selective acknowledgement when there is insufficient memory, which might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop).

The weakness was released 02/02/2006 by Scott Wood (Website). The advisory is shared at ftp.FreeBSD.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0433 since 01/25/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56240 (Phorum 5.2.x < 5.2.17 'control.php' 'real_name' XSS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.FreeBSD.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24453), Tenable (56240), SecurityFocus (BID 16466†), OSVDB (22861†) and Secunia (SA18696†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-58454. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
