A vulnerability was found in OpenLDAP (Directory Service Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function slap_passwd_parse of the file passwd.c of the component back-ldbm. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null termination vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-170. The product does not terminate or incorrectly terminates a string or array with a null character or equivalent terminator. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
ldbm_back_exop_passwd in the back-ldbm backend in passwd.c for OpenLDAP 2.1.12 and earlier, when the slap_passwd_parse function does not return LDAP_SUCCESS, attempts to free an uninitialized pointer, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault).
The weakness was disclosed 03/20/2003 by Ralf Haferkamp (Website). The advisory is shared for download at distro.conectiva.com.br. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-1201 since 05/04/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14463 (GLSA-200403-12 : OpenLDAP DoS Vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism.
