Details
A vulnerability was found in NetBSD up to 1.5.3 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function FD_SET of the component File Descriptors. The manipulation of the argument FD_SETSIZE with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in (1) mrinfo, (2) mtrace, and (3) pppd in NetBSD 1.4.x through 1.6 allows local users to gain privileges by executing the programs after filling the file descriptor tables, which produces file descriptors larger than FD_SETSIZE, which are not checked by FD_SET().
The weakness was disclosed 04/02/2003 (Website). The advisory is available at ftp.netbsd.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1500. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/01/2024).
