Details
A vulnerability was found in DCMTK up to 3.6.6. It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown functionality of the component dcmqrdb. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
DCMTK through 3.6.6 does not handle string copy properly. Sending specific requests to the dcmqrdb program, it would query its database and copy the result even if the result is null, which can incur a head-based overflow. An attacker can use it to launch a DoS attack.
The weakness was released 06/29/2022 as 5c14bf53fb42ceca12bbcc0016e8704b1580920d. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2021-41689 since 09/27/2021. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
