A vulnerability was found in Coolforum 0.5 Beta (Forum Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the file avatar.php. The manipulation of the argument img with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in avatar.php in CoolForum 0.5 beta allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via .. (dot dot) sequences in the img parameter.

The weakness was presented 04/02/2003 by Arnaud Jacques (Website). The advisory is shared at online.securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-1515.
