Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP RPC Endpoint Mapper null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP (Operating System). This affects an unknown function of the component RPC Endpoint Mapper. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The RPC component in Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows XP allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (disabled RPC service) via a malformed packet to the RPC Endpoint Mapper at TCP port 135, which triggers a null pointer dereference.

The weakness was disclosed 04/02/2003 by Dave Aitel with Immunity as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-1561 since 03/23/2003. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11159 (MS03-010: Microsoft Windows RPC Endpoint Manager Malformed Packet DoS (331953) (intrusive check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90534 (Microsoft Windows RPC Endpoint Mapper Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (MS03-010)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3238. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 1450.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (12533), Exploit-DB (21951), Tenable (11159), SecurityFocus (BID 6005†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-1293†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
