Details
A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos (Network Authentication Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Key Distribution Center. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Key Distribution Center (KDC) in Kerberos 5 (krb5) 1.2.7 and earlier allows remote, authenticated attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) on KDCs within the same realm using a certain protocol request that causes the KDC to corrupt its heap (aka "buffer underrun").
The weakness was shared 04/02/2003 (Website). The advisory is shared at debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0082 since 02/10/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15103 (Debian DSA-266-1 : krb5 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38371 (Red Hat Kerberos Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (15103), SecurityFocus (BID 7185†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-1552†). The entries VDB-20220 and VDB-20308 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
