Summary
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.18.9. The impacted element is the function nft_set_elem_init of the file net/netfilter/nf_tables_api.c of the component User Namespace Handler. Such manipulation leads to type confusion.
This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2022-34918. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Furthermore, an exploit is available.
A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.18.9 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function nft_set_elem_init of the file net/netfilter/nf_tables_api.c of the component User Namespace Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a type confusion vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-843. The product allocates or initializes a resource such as a pointer, object, or variable using one type, but it later accesses that resource using a type that is incompatible with the original type. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel through 5.18.9. A type confusion bug in nft_set_elem_init (leading to a buffer overflow) could be used by a local attacker to escalate privileges, a different vulnerability than CVE-2022-32250. (The attacker can obtain root access, but must start with an unprivileged user namespace to obtain CAP_NET_ADMIN access.) This can be fixed in nft_setelem_parse_data in net/netfilter/nf_tables_api.c.
The weakness was published 07/05/2022. The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-34918 since 07/04/2022. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
