Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in IBM Lotus Domino Web Server up to 6.0.1 (Groupware Software). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component COM Object Control Handlerl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the COM Object Control Handler for Lotus Domino 6.0.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via multiple attack vectors, as demonstrated using the InitializeUsingNotesUserName method in the iNotes ActiveX control.
The weakness was presented 04/02/2003 by Mark Litchfield with Next Generation Security Software as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-0179 since 03/28/2003. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/18/2024). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86480 (IBM Lotus Domino 6.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
