Apache HTTP Server up to 2.0.45 mod_dav apr_psprintf memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.0.45 (Web Server) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function apr_psprintf of the component mod_dav. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Vulnerability in the apr_psprintf function in the Apache Portable Runtime (APR) library for Apache 2.0.37 through 2.0.45 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via long strings, as demonstrated using XML objects to mod_dav, and possibly other vectors.

The weakness was presented 06/07/2003 by Joe Orton (iDefense) with iDEFENSE as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0245 since 05/06/2003. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11665 (Apache 2.0.x < 2.0.46 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86533 (Apache 2 APR Library Denial of Service Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12465. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 1614.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (12090), Exploit-DB (38), Tenable (11665), SecurityFocus (BID 7723†) and OSVDB (4340†). See VDB-81 and VDB-80 for similar entries. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
