A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in IBM AIX 5.2 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown function of the file sendmail.cf of the component Configuration File. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
IBM AIX 5.2 and earlier distributes Sendmail with a configuration file (sendmail.cf) with the (1) promiscuous_relay, (2) accept_unresolvable_domains, and (3) accept_unqualified_senders features enabled, which allows Sendmail to be used as an open mail relay for sending spam e-mail.
The issue has been introduced in 10/01/2002. The weakness was released 06/16/2003 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0285 since 05/13/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 258 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10262 (MTA Open Mail Relaying Allowed), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SMTP problems. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74037 (Possible Mail Relay).
Upgrading to version 5.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
