A vulnerability was found in OpenZeppelin up to 4.7.1. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function supportsInterface. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. OpenZeppelin Contracts is a library for secure smart contract development. The target contract of an EIP-165 `supportsInterface` query can cause unbounded gas consumption by returning a lot of data, while it is generally assumed that this operation has a bounded cost. The issue has been fixed in v4.7.2. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this issue.
The weakness was presented 08/02/2022 as GHSA-7grf-83vw-6f5x. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-35915 since 07/15/2022. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
Upgrading to version 4.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
