A vulnerability has been found in Nextcloud Server up to 22.2.8/23.0.5/24.0.1 (Cloud Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the file index.php/settings/admin/sharing of the component Federated Share Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a excessive authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-307. Nextcloud server is an open source personal cloud solution. In affected versions an attacker could brute force to find if federated sharing is being used and potentially try to brute force access tokens for federated shares (`a-zA-Z0-9` ^ 15). It is recommended that the Nextcloud Server is upgraded to 22.2.9, 23.0.6 or 24.0.2. Users unable to upgrade may disable federated sharing via the Admin Sharing settings in `index.php/settings/admin/sharing`.
The weakness was shared 08/05/2022 as GHSA-2vwh-5v93-3vcq. The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-31118 since 05/18/2022. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1110.001 for this issue.
