Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in F5 BIG-IP up to 15.1.3/16.1.0 (Firewall Software). Affected is an unknown function of the component Appliance Mode Restrictions. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
In BIG-IP Versions 16.1.x before 16.1.1 and 15.1.x before 15.1.4, when running in Appliance mode, an authenticated attacker may be able to bypass Appliance mode restrictions due to a directory traversal vulnerability in an undisclosed page within iApps. A successful exploit can allow the attacker to cross a security boundary. Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.
The weakness was disclosed 08/05/2022 as K34893234. The advisory is shared for download at support.f5.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-31473 since 07/19/2022. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
Upgrading to version 15.1.4 or 16.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
