A vulnerability was found in Alt-N Webadmin (the affected version is unknown) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code in the library WebAdmin.dll of the file webadmin.exe. The manipulation of the argument USER with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in WebAdmin.exe for WebAdmin allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an HTTP request to WebAdmin.dll with a long USER argument.

The weakness was presented 06/24/2003 by Mark Litchfield with NGSSoftware as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0471 since 06/26/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at metasploit.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11771 (Alt-N WebAdmin Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 50076 (Alt-N WebAdmin USER Parameter Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2246. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2214.
