PHP up to 5.1.0 IMAP mb_send_mail

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in PHP (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function mb_send_mail of the component IMAP. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Argument injection vulnerability in certain PHP 4.x and 5.x applications, when used with sendmail and when accepting remote input for the additional_parameters argument to the mb_send_mail function, allows context-dependent attackers to read and create arbitrary files by providing extra -C and -X arguments to sendmail. NOTE: it could be argued that this is a class of technology-specific vulnerability, instead of a particular instance; if so, then this should not be included in CVE.

The weakness was disclosed 02/28/2006 by Cdric Clerget as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-1014 since 03/06/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17716 (PHP mb_send_mail() Function Parameter Security Bypass), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165152 (SUSE Security Update for PHP 4, PHP 5 (SUSE-SA:2006:024)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at php.net.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (27335), Tenable (17716), SecurityFocus (BID 16878†), OSVDB (23534†) and Secunia (SA18694†).
