Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.15.5 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component ELF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in the (1) add_key, (2) request_key, and (3) keyctl functions in Linux kernel 2.6.x allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) or read sensitive kernel memory by modifying the length of a string argument between the time that the kernel calculates the length and when it copies the data into kernel memory.
The bug was discovered 03/13/2006. The weakness was released 03/02/2006 by David Howells with Kernel Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-0457 since 01/27/2006. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22276 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2006:0575)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115389 (Linux Kernel Unspecified Socket Buffer Handling Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
