Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function xfs_ioc_space of the file xfs/xfs_ioctl.c of the component XFS Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer size vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-131. The product does not correctly calculate the size to be used when allocating a buffer, which could lead to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
A data leak flaw was found in the way XFS_IOC_ALLOCSP IOCTL in the XFS filesystem allowed for size increase of files with unaligned size. A local attacker could use this flaw to leak data on the XFS filesystem otherwise not accessible to them.
The weakness was published 08/25/2022. The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2021-4155 since 12/22/2021. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 236670 (Alibaba Cloud Linux 3 : 0125: cloud-kernel bugfix, enhancement and (ALINUX3-SA-2022:0125)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.16 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
