Details
A vulnerability has been found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (the affected version is unknown) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function nvme_ctrl_reset of the component NVM Express Controller Emulation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A DMA reentrancy issue was found in the NVM Express Controller (NVME) emulation in QEMU. This CVE is similar to CVE-2021-3750 and, just like it, when the reentrancy write triggers the reset function nvme_ctrl_reset(), data structs will be freed leading to a use-after-free issue. A malicious guest could use this flaw to crash the QEMU process on the host, resulting in a denial of service condition or, potentially, executing arbitrary code within the context of the QEMU process on the host.
The weakness was disclosed 08/26/2022 as 556. The advisory is shared at gitlab.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2021-3929 since 11/05/2021. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at gitlab.com.
