Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (version now known). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function smb2_ioctl_query_info of the file fs/cifs/smb2ops.c of the component Common Internet File System. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
A denial of service (DOS) issue was found in the Linux kernel’s smb2_ioctl_query_info function in the fs/cifs/smb2ops.c Common Internet File System (CIFS) due to an incorrect return from the memdup_user function. This flaw allows a local, privileged (CAP_SYS_ADMIN) attacker to crash the system.
The weakness was disclosed 08/27/2022. The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-0168 since 01/10/2022. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
