A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple QuickTime and Darwin Streaming Server up to 4.1.3f (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component MS DOS Device Name. The manipulation with the input value .. leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Apple QuickTime / Darwin Streaming Server before 4.1.3g allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a .. (dot dot) sequence followed by an MS-DOS device name (e.g. AUX) in a request to HTTP port 1220, a different vulnerability than CVE-2003-0421.
The weakness was disclosed 08/27/2003 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at rapid7.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0502 since 06/11/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 4.1.3g eliminates this vulnerability.
