QEMU virtio-fs Shared File System Daemon dropped privileges

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (the affected version is unknown). Affected is an unknown code of the component virtio-fs Shared File System Daemon. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a dropped privileges vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-273. The product attempts to drop privileges but does not check or incorrectly checks to see if the drop succeeded. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A flaw was found in the QEMU virtio-fs shared file system daemon (virtiofsd) implementation. This flaw is strictly related to CVE-2018-13405. A local guest user can create files in the directories shared by virtio-fs with unintended group ownership in a scenario where a directory is SGID to a certain group and is writable by a user who is not a member of the group. This could allow a malicious unprivileged user inside the guest to gain access to resources accessible to the root group, potentially escalating their privileges within the guest. A malicious local user in the host might also leverage this unexpected executable file created by the guest to escalate their privileges on the host system.

The weakness was presented 08/29/2022 as 449e8171f96a6a944d1f3b7d3627ae059eae21ca. The advisory is available at gitlab.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-0358 since 01/25/2022. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209571 (Oracle Linux 8 : virt:kvm_utils3 (ELSA-2024-12792)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Applying the patch 449e8171f96a6a944d1f3b7d3627ae059eae21ca is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at gitlab.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (209571) and EUVD (EUVD-2022-15514). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
