Details
A vulnerability was found in GDM up to 2.4.1.6. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the file /.xsession-errors of the component Xsession. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
GDM before 2.4.1.6, when using the "examine session errors" feature, allows local users to read arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the ~/.xsession-errors file.
The weakness was presented 08/27/2003 with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is shared at redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0547 since 07/14/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
