Summary
A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in GNU Inetutils up to 2.3. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the component telnetd. Performing a manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-39028. There is no available exploit. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.
Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU Inetutils up to 2.3. It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown functionality of the component telnetd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
telnetd in GNU Inetutils through 2.3, MIT krb5-appl through 1.0.3, and derivative works has a NULL pointer dereference via 0xff 0xf7 or 0xff 0xf8. In a typical installation, the telnetd application would crash but the telnet service would remain available through inetd. However, if the telnetd application has many crashes within a short time interval, the telnet service would become unavailable after inetd logs a "telnet/tcp server failing (looping), service terminated" error. NOTE: MIT krb5-appl is not supported upstream but is shipped by a few Linux distributions. The affected code was removed from the supported MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) product many years ago, at version 1.8.
The weakness was presented 08/30/2022. The advisory is shared at pierrekim.github.io. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-39028 since 08/30/2022. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
