Linux Kernel KVM kvm/lapic.c kvm_irq_delivery_to_apic_fast null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (the affected version is unknown). Affected by this vulnerability is the function kvm_irq_delivery_to_apic_fast of the file kvm/lapic.c of the component KVM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel’s KVM when attempting to set a SynIC IRQ. This issue makes it possible for a misbehaving VMM to write to SYNIC/STIMER MSRs, causing a NULL pointer dereference. This flaw allows an unprivileged local attacker on the host to issue specific ioctl calls, causing a kernel oops condition that results in a denial of service.

The weakness was released 08/31/2022 as 00b5f37189d24ac3ed46cb7f11742094778c46ce. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-2153 since 06/21/2022. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 276283 (TencentOS Server 2: kernel (TSSA-2024:1021)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Applying the patch 00b5f37189d24ac3ed46cb7f11742094778c46ce is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (276283) and EUVD (EUVD-2022-34438). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
