Linux Kernel kernel/events/core.c perf_event_open race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in Linux Kernel. Affected is the function perf_event_open of the file kernel/events/core.c. Executing a manipulation can lead to race condition. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2022-1729. The attack can be launched remotely. No exploit exists. Applying a patch is advised to resolve this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version unknown). This vulnerability affects the function perf_event_open of the file kernel/events/core.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-366. If two threads of execution use a resource simultaneously, there exists the possibility that resources may be used while invalid, in turn making the state of execution undefined. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A race condition was found the Linux kernel in perf_event_open() which can be exploited by an unprivileged user to gain root privileges. The bug allows to build several exploit primitives such as kernel address information leak, arbitrary execution, etc.

The weakness was disclosed 09/02/2022. The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-1729 since 05/16/2022. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 247421 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2022-1729), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (247421) and EUVD (EUVD-2022-25010). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
