Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.18 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function unmap_mapping_range of the file include/asm-generic/tlb.h of the component Device Driver Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in include/asm-generic/tlb.h in the Linux kernel before 5.19. Because of a race condition (unmap_mapping_range versus munmap), a device driver can free a page while it still has stale TLB entries. This only occurs in situations with VM_PFNMAP VMAs.
The weakness was released 09/02/2022. The advisory is shared at bugs.chromium.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-39188 since 09/02/2022. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 5.19 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at cdn.kernel.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2022-41733). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
