A vulnerability was found in Gamespy Arcade 1.3e. It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing of the file GSAPAK.EXE of the component APK Archive Filename Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in GSAPAK.EXE for GameSpy Arcade, possibly versions before 1.3e, allows remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files and execute arbitrary code via .. (dot dot) sequences in filenames in a .APK (Zip) file.
The weakness was released 08/27/2003 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2003-0650 since 08/04/2003. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Upgrading to version 1.3e eliminates this vulnerability.
