QEMU Tulip Device Emulation denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as problematic has been found in QEMU. Impacted is an unknown function of the component Tulip Device Emulation. The manipulation results in denial of service. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2022-2962. There is no exploit available. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (the affected version unknown). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown part of the component Tulip Device Emulation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

A DMA reentrancy issue was found in the Tulip device emulation in QEMU. When Tulip reads or writes to the rx/tx descriptor or copies the rx/tx frame, it doesn't check whether the destination address is its own MMIO address. This can cause the device to trigger MMIO handlers multiple times, possibly leading to a stack or heap overflow. A malicious guest could use this flaw to crash the QEMU process on the host, resulting in a denial of service condition.

The weakness was shared 09/14/2022 as 1171. The advisory is available at gitlab.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-2962 since 08/23/2022. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 215403 (Azure Linux 3.0 Security Update: qemu / qemu-kvm (CVE-2022-2962)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Applying the patch 36a894aeb64a2e02871016da1c37d4a4ca109182 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at gitlab.com.
