Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in XStream (version now known). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component XML Data Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Those using Xstream to seralize XML data may be vulnerable to Denial of Service attacks (DOS). If the parser is running on user supplied input, an attacker may supply content that causes the parser to crash by stackoverflow. This effect may support a denial of service attack.
The weakness was published 09/16/2022 as 304. The advisory is shared at bugs.chromium.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-40152 since 09/07/2022. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
