A vulnerability was found in newsPHP 216 and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file nphpd.php of the component HTTP Request Handler. The manipulation of the argument nphp_users with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. nphpd.php in newsPHP 216 and earlier allows remote attackers to bypass authentication via an HTTP request with a modified nphp_users array, which is used for authentication.
The bug was discovered 08/27/2003. The weakness was presented 10/20/2003 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0754 since 09/04/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 54 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:nphpd.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11469 (newsPHP Authentication Bypass Vulnerability).
