Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in OWASP ModSecurity Core Rule Set up to 3.3.2. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Response Body Handler. The manipulation of the argument Accept with an unknown input leads to a protection mechanism vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-693. The product does not use or incorrectly uses a protection mechanism that provides sufficient defense against directed attacks against the product. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The OWASP ModSecurity Core Rule Set (CRS) is affected by a response body bypass. A client can issue an HTTP Accept header field containing an optional "charset" parameter in order to receive the response in an encoded form. Depending on the "charset", this response can not be decoded by the web application firewall. A restricted resource, access to which would ordinarily be detected, may therefore bypass detection. The legacy CRS versions 3.0.x and 3.1.x are affected, as well as the currently supported versions 3.2.1 and 3.3.2. Integrators and users are advised to upgrade to 3.2.2 and 3.3.3 respectively.
The weakness was shared 09/20/2022. The advisory is available at coreruleset.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-39957 since 09/05/2022. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 3.2.2 or 3.3.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
