Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in OpenSSL 0.9.6e (Network Encryption Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the file s2_srvr.c of the component SSLv2 Message Handler. The manipulation as part of a CLIENT_MASTER_KEY leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
OpenSSL 0.9.6e uses assertions when detecting buffer overflow attacks instead of less severe mechanisms, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via certain messages that cause OpenSSL to abort from a failed assertion, as demonstrated using SSLv2 CLIENT_MASTER_KEY messages, which are not properly handled in s2_srvr.c.
The issue has been introduced in 07/30/2002. The weakness was shared 11/17/2003 (Website). The advisory is available at cvs.openssl.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1568. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/29/2021).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 475 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17747 (OpenSSL < 0.9.6f Denial of Service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (13340), Tenable (17747), SecurityFocus (BID 8746†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31422†). The entries VDB-20957 and VDB-20956 are related to this item. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
