A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Shell Link Handler. The manipulation with the input value .. leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in the "Shell Folders" capability in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via .. (dot dot) sequences in a "shell:" link.
