It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in wolfSSL up to 5.5.0. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code of the component TLS 1.3 Handshake Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In wolfSSL before 5.5.1, malicious clients can cause a buffer overflow during a TLS 1.3 handshake. This occurs when an attacker supposedly resumes a previous TLS session. During the resumption Client Hello a Hello Retry Request must be triggered. Both Client Hellos are required to contain a list of duplicate cipher suites to trigger the buffer overflow. In total, two Client Hellos have to be sent: one in the resumed session, and a second one as a response to a Hello Retry Request message.
The weakness was disclosed 09/29/2022. It is possible to read the advisory at wolfssl.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-39173 since 09/02/2022. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
Upgrading to version 5.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com.
