A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Dag Apt Repository mod_gzip 1.3.26.1a. This issue affects the function mod_gzip_printf of the component GET Request Handler. The manipulation of the argument Accept-Encoding with the input value gzip leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Stack-based buffer overflow in mod_gzip_printf for mod_gzip 1.3.26.1a and earlier, and possibly later official versions, when running in debug mode, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long filename in a GET request with an "Accept-Encoding: gzip" header.
The weakness was released 06/01/2003 by Matthew Murphy as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0842 since 10/08/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely.
