Details
A vulnerability was found in slocate up to 2.6. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file main.c of the component Database Handler. The manipulation of the argument pathlen with the input value -1 leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in main.c of slocate 2.6, and possibly other versions, may allow local users to gain privileges via a modified slocate database that causes a negative "pathlen" value to be used.
The bug was discovered 10/06/2003. The weakness was released 11/17/2003 by Patrik Hornik (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0848 since 10/08/2003. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13672 (Fedora Core 1 : slocate-2.7-4 (2004-059)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
