Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun JVM and SDK up to 1.4.1_03. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function loadClass. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The loadClass method of the sun.applet.AppletClassLoader class in the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) in Sun SDK and JRE 1.4.1_03 and earlier allows remote attackers to bypass sandbox restrictions and execute arbitrary code via a loaded class name that contains "/" (slash) instead of "." (dot) characters, which bypasses a call to the Security Manager s checkPackageAccess method.
The bug was discovered 10/21/2003. The weakness was presented 11/17/2003 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-0896 since 10/24/2003. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely.
