Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 7.2 FP9 (Database Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the file db2job/db2job2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
IBM DB2 7.2 before FixPak 10a, and earlier versions including 7.1, allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files and gain privileges via a symlink attack on (1) db2job and (2) db2job2.
The weakness was published 11/17/2003 (Website). The advisory is shared at ftp.software.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0898 since 10/27/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k.
